The Radcliffe Capelet is named for English writer Ann Radcliffe. Considered a pioneer of Gothic literature, she was a leading figure in the genre and widely admired. Radcliffe is considered unique for her explanations of supernatural figures – she often gave them natural sources, such as a cat making a noise. Little else is known about Radcliffe’s personal life: critics have found her writings contain anti-Catholic rhetoric and it is suspected she had strained relations with her mother-in-law.
